Where Is Everybody?
Another Nine Inch Nails I really like. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an official music video. However, I was able to find the lyrics and the song on YouTube. Here it is below:
The thing about this song is I first heard it when I became obsessed with Nine Inch Nails in high school. This was one of two songs I listened to a lot when I Was programming my basic game engine for Simple Quest. I never really got Simple Quest to work, but I did invent a ‘pooling’ memory management system in C++. Each datum had a pool identifier and a datum identifier. If two variables had the same value, they shared the same identifications, but if one differed, only then would a separate variable space come into existence. If it changed back, only one variable was used. This was useful when loading and caching bitmaps, sounds, or other memory intensive data. It’s kind of like a memory cache in real time. Unfortunately, I don’t have the code anymore, as that was 14 years ago. When I showed it to my college placement counselor he said I could skip the first ANSI C class and go straight to Data Structures. But I told him I didn’t want to miss anything so I would take the normal class. Thank god, every other class was super hard enough that I didn’t need to worry about difficult programming too.
Anyways, I got in the habit of really focusing on programming and figuring out stuff when I listened to Nine Inch Nails. So sometimes, when I need to concentrate or program, I listen to Nine Inch Nails because, oddly, it helps me concentrate. Maybe I just have a thing for rampant indiscernible noise.
I like this particular song because in some ways it reflected my own internal isolation at the time. It’s a bit existential, which is always neat. I got the lyrics in the video so that you could also appreciate the song.
